Health Highlights

This colorful, flavorful dish is bursting full of benefits for the body. Take a look at a few of the health highlights that make us want to salute this beautiful, berry-full dish all summer long:

Raspberries: With fiber, protein, and carbohydrates to spare, raspberries are a dieter’s best friend. Not only are they low in calories and cholesterol-free, but they also contain high levels of antioxidants to slow the growth of cancer or fight against signs of aging.[1]

Blueberries: Blueberries are known as a wonderful source of dietary fiber, which may help reduce the risk of heart disease. They also have a high level of manganese, which can help the body process things like cholesterol, protein, or carbohydrates.[2]

Strawberries: As a good source of vitamin C, strawberries can help to boost immunity, and provide the body with powerful antioxidants. A lesser-known benefit of strawberries is that they can act as a natural defense against wrinkles, because vitamin C is crucial for producing collagen.[3]

Cherries: Though you might not think of cherries as a superfood, they hold impressive health benefits for anyone who incorporates them into their diet. Among many benefits, cherries have been known to help reduce inflammation in several areas of the body. Studies have even shown that the cardiovascular benefits of cherries could help to reduce the risk of stroke.[4]

Ants No More

"Last summer, I was attacked by ants. They had colonized near my strawberry patch. I panicked a little—I hate ants!—and dowsed the suckers in a solution of water and Peppermint. The next day, the ants were completely gone! I was impressed by how fast it worked. Plus, even though I did go a little overboard (a few sprays would have worked), I know Peppermint is safe for my strawberries and me." -Elizabeth Sperling

What is leaky gut syndrome?

Are your probiotics getting to the root of your problem?

Are your probiotics getting to the root of your problem?

It’s disgusting to think about it, but, it's yeast in your digestive tract spreading throughout your entire body, clogging your organs, and causes them to malfunction, this is called “leaky gut.” Are red flags coming to your mind? Because all health begins with the gut!

Doctors have told us for years that sugars, artificial sweeteners and the worst offender of all is any sort of diet soda, and they are directly linked to obesity. Artificial sweeteners are “rocket fuel” for the bad bacteria. Even worse, sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine!  But have you heard of azodicarbonamide?

  1. What is azodicarbonamide (ADA)?

Azodicarbonamide (ADA) is a chemical substance FDA approved for use as a whitening agent in cereal flour and as a dough conditioner in bread baking. Also used as a foaming agent in plastics!

2. On what basis did FDA approve the use of ADA

FDA approved the use of ADA as a food additive in cereal flour and as a dough conditioner based on a comprehensive review of safety studies, including multi-year feeding studies.

3. What about studies that show breakdown products of ADA, specifically semicarbazide, to be a carcinogen?

During bread making, ADA completely breaks down to form other chemicals, one of which is SEM. At high levels, SEM has been shown to increase the incident of tumors when fed to female mice, but not to male mice or either gender of rat. These studies were conducted in rodents at levels of SEM that far exceed estimates of human exposure from the consumption of ADA-treated flour or bread products. According to the FDA.

4. Does ADA have other uses?

Yes, ADA is also authorized for use as a blowing agent in sealing caps for food containers such as ketchup bottles! And this is in our food!

In a 1999 report, the World Health Organization linked azodicarbonamide to "respiratory issues, allergies and asthma"

The use is banned in Europe and Australia. So why is the use still legal in America? And in case you're wondering, here's a list of fast-food restaurants who use azodicarbonamide in their bread: McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, Arby's, Jack in the Box, and Chick-fil-A.

NBC  reported that  Subway found out customers don't like eating a chemical found in yoga mats, shoe rubber and synthetic leather.  CNN reported that subway was removing the dough conditioner chemical from its bread. These discoveries were in 2014. But with 74% of americans suffer from some sort of digestive issues it's worth to note what the experts in digestive health have to say.

The ideal balance of bacteria is to have 80 percent good bacteria and 20 percent bad bacteria; having any more than 20 percent bad bacteria is where the problems begin. How does this happen?

Well, artificial sweeteners, sugar, and artificial products put into our food make it very easy for the average person to consume to much. The american Heart Association advises people to to consume 5-8 grams of sugar per day, but the average American consumes up to 41 grams of sugar per day, which definitely contributes to the buildup of yeast in your digestive tract. Our gut is home to 60 percent of the cells in our body, so it's no wonder that what we consume has such a grand effect on how our body responds and functions.

So the is brings to light the importance of a good probiotic for a healthy digestive system, because once the bad bacteria/gut yeast is balanced, then your body will be able to get sufficient amounts of energy from the healthy foods you consume. Also, the production of serotonin can slow with yeast in your digestive tract, so once the yeast is gone, you and your body will be much happier. I know because I’m living proof. Over the last couple of years I have been able to get back into a normal weight range and that has helped mange healthy blood pressure.

Probiotic’s are not all the same. If you are thinking I’ve been there done that and I didn’t get the results. Look at your probiotic. I use PB Assist+ is a proprietary formula of pre-biotic fiber and six strains of probiotic microorganisms in a unique double-layer vegetable capsule. (designed to help protect the sensitive probiotic cultures from stomach acid so it actually gets to the gut) Also essential oils of ginger and peppermint can soothe intestinal inflammation and support the healing of leaky gut.

The PB Assit+ delivers 6 billion CFUs of active probiotic cultures and soluble pre-biotic FOS(fructo-oligosaccharides) that encourage friendly bacterial growth.

do Terra also has a PB Assist Jr is a powdered probiotic supplement designed for children or adults who have trouble swallowing pills. It includes 5 billion live cells of a unique blend of six different probiotic strains, specifically selected for their benefits among children. These probiotics have been blended into a delicious powder that can be poured directly into the mouth for a fun and tasty way to integrate probiotics into anyone’s daily routine.

Organic Gardening

Our city garden is a blessing to our budget. I am blessed to have a husband with a green thumb that is passionate about gardening, simple living and can build anything. Our garden measures 35x35 and has been a journey on learning how to protect our garden form pest. We have used neem oil with success on our fruit and nut trees but was not getting the desired results on the garden. We had pest eating our food, and we did not want to use any pesticides.

After researching we went with the castile soap and TerraShield and its worked perfect.

  • We mix 1 cup Castile soap
  • 30 drops of TerraShield
  • 5 Gallons sprayer.  We are using it twice a month. The results have been fabulous. No more eaten spincich.

This one requires applying every other day, but it keeps your garden protected!

 Garden Spray

Fill a quart size spray bottle with water and add the essential oils and soap. Shake gently and spray on the foliage.

Essential Oils for Pets

HOW TO APPLY ESSENTIAL OILS TO DOGS

Look at the bottom of page for cat sugestions.

Aromatically

For dogs, essential oils can be used aromatically by putting a drop of the essential oil on their collar or on their dog bed. You can also make a spray by adding a few essential oil drops to water and spraying the dog’s fur.

Topically

You can apply essential oils to the spine, ears, or even on the toes/pads of dogs. You can apply essential oils directly to the area pretty much anywhere on the body. But remember to avoid the eyes, nose, anal and genital areas.

Internal

The brand I use is 100% pure therapeutic grade. Please understand this matters! Before you have your pet ingest them check out why I use these brand.   It is recommended only administering one drop when allowing a dog to ingest internally.

Only 1-2 drops of oil are necessary on animals, as they respond more quickly to oils than humans. Fractionated coconut oil can be added to extend the oil over larger areas and to heavily dilute the essential oil for use on smaller animals, especially cats. Certified Therapeutic Grade ONLY.

*Nervousness: oils- Calming Blend, lavender, Grounding Blend. Rub 1-2 drops between hands, and apply to muzzle, between toes, on tops of feet for the dog to smell. Also apply to edges of ears to help support calming.  ( I use one drop of lavender for my little Joey, he is our ten pound Yorkie Terrier. Joey gets really nervous during thunderstorms).

*Stiff Joints: oils - frankincense, rosemary, lavender and ginger. Dilute with fractionated coconut oil, and apply topically on affected joints.

*Bleeding: oils- helichrysum, geranium or lemon apply topical with carrier oil. Bleeding toe nail lemon or Helichrysum if you cut toenail too short and it bleeds put 1 drop on quick of nail to stop bleeding.

*Bladder: oils- Frankincense, OnGuard, and cinnamon 2 drops each in capsule 2xday.

*Burns: Lavender- apply neat to burn, for large areas can be diluted in ratio of 4-6 drops to one tablespoon FCO- in spray top bottle-lightly spray area.

*Strong and Healthy Bones:  oils- lemongrass.  Apply topical with carrier oil. xEOmega oil capsules, LifeLong vitality pack for large breed dogs. NOTE* I have removed deep Blue oil blend form oils to use on dogs. Wintergreen, one of its ingredients, metabolized to salicylic Acid= aspirin, which can be problematic for dogs- mainly GI issues)

*Support while mending Bone : oil- Frankincense apply topical with carrier oil. DDR oil blend mixed into food 2 x day. Works best with moist or canned food.

*Calm: oils Calming Blend, lavender, Invigorating Blend. These can be topical or aroma therapy.

*Lumps/Bumps Skin: Oils- sandalwood, frankincense apply topical. plus DDR prime oil in food 2x/day.

*Coughs: Oils- eucalyptus, apply on fur or stomach. Breathe- diffuse or apply a few drops to chest, put on pet bedding (acts as diffuser) Our basset hounds benefit from this treatment.

*Earache: Blend one drop lavender and one drop roman chamomile in one tsp. fractionated coconut oil. Apply 1-2 drops to inside and outside of ear. We have one basset hound that has battled with this problem often, we have found that usings melaleuca on the outside of the ear has relieved him of this problem.

*Ear Conditions: Oils- Cleansing Blend. Dip cotton swab in oil, and apply to inside and front of ear.
